Types of Steel Materials and Their Uses

Steel is a building material that can be used in a variety of ways that can provide a range of advantages to construction projects. It’s an affordable material, with plenty of strength and durability to ensure your structure will be solid and last for long. It’s also easy to mold to allow for greater flexibility in the design of buildings than would otherwise be possible. This flexibility is crucial for any construction job, particularly one which is time-based and needs to adhere to strict deadlines.

There are many kinds of steel, however stainless and mild steels are the most commonly used. The proportions of iron, carbon and chromium determine the properties and applications of these alloys. For example, steels with high levels of chromium tend to be very hard, but they are also ductile and corrosion-resistant. They are used in the manufacture of industrial equipment, automobile parts, and kitchen appliances.

Other alloys are also used to serve specific needs. Tool steel is abrasion resistant and extremely tough. It is employed in knives and hammers. Nickel steel is resistant to corrosion, strong and has excellent welding properties. This type of steel is a popular choice for wire chains and metal chains. Tungsten steel is extremely resistant to heat and makes excellent drill bits.

Structural steel is another well-known kind of steel for construction projects. It’s usually medium or low carbon, making it stiff enough to support large structures yet flexible enough to endure the effects of shifting of earth. It’s commonly used in pre-engineered steel structures that utilize I-beams, Rebar steel, and concrete rods to reinforce.
