Coronavirus Guide

A coronavirus infection is a virus that can cause respiratory symptoms that can feel like a cold or flu. The virus that is causing the current outbreak is called SARS-CoV-2. It’s the same virus that caused a massive outbreak in 2003, dubbed severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The new virus is spreading more easily and quicker than the one that caused SARS. It is also spreading further than the SARS CoV-1 virus during its outbreak.

The disease spreads through very fine particles or droplets — aerosols — which are released when someone who is infected coughs, sneezes, or talks. The virus can be floating for several hours in the air. You can breathe it in or even touch it on surfaces. Infected people may contract the virus after touching a person with the virus or a conglomerate mergers surfaces and breathing the virus in or putting their hands into their mouth or nose, or eyes. Some people do not show any signs, and might not even realize they have the disease. Others may become ill.

The majority of people contract a coronavirus once or twice in their lives, mostly as children. Most cases are mild, and then they disappear after a few days. However, some cases can be quite severe. Scientists are working hard to find a cure.
